Lawyer and lecturer. Lawyer for the Council of State. Full Professor in Administrative Law. Lawyer specialised in banking and stock market law. Former Minister for Justice.
He was a Popular Party MP from 1993 to 2004 and member of the Government, initially as Secretary of State for Parliamentary Relations and then as Minister for Justice.
In 1984, he was awarded a degree summa cum laude in Law. That same year he founded his own legal practice, where he exercised that profession for the first eight years, until he started full-time political activity in 1993, returning to the law in 2006, when that dedication came to an end.
In 1985, he was awarded a degree in Contemporary History. He was awarded a doctorate summa cum laude in Administrative-Economic Law in 1986, after presenting a thesis about the control exercised by the Bank of Spain over the financial system.
In 1988, he was successful in the open examination for Lawyers for the Council of State, with first place, and practised in the Economy and Taxation section. In 1991 he was successful in the open examination for the post of Full Professor of Law at the Complutense University of Madrid. He carried out postgraduate studies at the universities of Harvard and the London School of Economics (LSE). In 1989 he was elected General Secretary of the Complutense University of Madrid.
Since 2005 he has been Chairman of the Legal Professionals Forum, which periodically gathers the 10 major legal practices in Spain together. He is likewise editor of the journals Law (“La Ley”) and Issues of Today (“Temas de Hoy”).
In June 2008, Michavila founded, together with the former JP Morgan banker, Daniel de Fernando, the multifamily office MdeF which has offices in Madrid, Barcelona, London and New York. In March 2010 he was appointed Chairman of the advisory board of Wolters Kluwer Spain, the publisher of such works as Law (“La Ley”), Manager Special (“Especial Directivo”) and Financial Strategy (“Estrategia Financiera”), and since October 2010 he has been an adviser for the JP Morgan infrastructure fund.
Jose María Michavila is also Secretary-General of the Foundation ALAS which fights against poverty in Latin America, especially in childhood.
