Jose María Michavila, founding partner of MA Abogados, has 30 years of experience as a lawyer and law professor.

In 1984 he founded his own law firm specialized in banking and stock market law. During that same time he also continued giving lectures as a Professor of Administrative Law in the University Complutense of Madrid.

In 1988 he enter the Council of State where he acted as attorney at law in the Commission of economics and finance.

In 1991 is appointed as General Secretary of the Complutense University.

In 1992 he initiated with other professionals of the Spanish financial world the Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles (IEB) of which he was its first Secretary.

In 1993 he decided to dedicate his whole career to politics. He withdrew from the law firm he started and focussed in his activity as MP of the Popular Party. He was a member of the Government initially as Secretary of State for Parliamentary Relations and then as Minister of Justicia.

After leaving his role as MP he reoriented his career founding a new law firm, MA Abogados in November 2009.

In 2012 he is appointed as elected member of the Council of State and is renewed in this position by the new government in 2018.

 

Education

Degree in Law summa cum laude from the Complutense University. Where he also was awarded a degree in Contemporary History in 1985.

He received a fellowship from the British Council in 1989. Also that same year he is awarded with a fellowships from the Japanese Government due to having one of the best curriculums in the European Union. As well as the study fellowships that he is granted with from the governments of France (1993) and United States (1994).

He was awarded a doctorate summa cum laude in Administrative-Economic Law in 1987, after presenting a thesis about the control exercised by the Bank of Spain over the financial system.

In 1988, he was successful in the open examination for Lawyers for the Council of State, with first place, and practised in the Economy and Taxation section. In 1991 he was successful in the open examination for the post of Full Professor of Law at the Complutense University of Madrid.

He carried out postgraduate studies at the universities of Harvard and the London School of Economics (LSE).

Secretary-General of the Foundation ALAS which fights against poverty in Latin America, especially in childhood.

Teaching colaboration

Full Professor in Administrative Law.

José María Michavila gives lectures in the humanities Masters in the university Francisco de Vitoria about Contemporary History.

He also gives an annual lecture in the Executive Program in Harvard University.
